The Kettle Clicks Twice
Evening lamp on landing table
The kettle clicks twice because I restart it when the first boil cools while I stare at a sentence that will not settle.
Evening ritual: lamp on the landing table, chair angled toward the stairwell so I hear arrivals and departures on the green tiles.
The first click is hope. The second click is acceptance that tea will be hot when the paragraph is still cold.
Arjun-at-night is a smaller person than Arjun-at-morning. The memo prefers the smaller person.
I hear the coffee shop downstairs shuttering. Metal on metal, a sound like a period at the end of a long sentence.
Neighbours pass on the landing without knocking. The flat door is closed but not unfriendly.
Writing about ritual risks pretension. I cut adjectives until only the kettle remains honest.
When the tea is finally poured, the lamp catches the steam. For a second the room looks staged. Then it looks like home.
I stop at one page. More would become performance.
The stairwell tiles cool after midnight. I know because I checked once during insomnia and noted the temperature like a weather report.
Twice-clicked kettle, once-filled cup, zero audience. That is the whole theatre.
